Metering data relevant to billing is personal data within the meaning of the GDPR, which requires special protection. Furthermore, special security regulations apply in the area of critical infrastructures, which, among other things, prescribe end-to-end encryption of the data transmission. The BSI prefers the TLS encryption protocol. Standard LoRaWAN cannot meet these high requirements. For this reason, PHYSEC's IoT security experts, together with the renowned water meter manufacturer Kamstrup and Gelsenwasser AG, have developed a concept that enables BSI-compliant connection of water meters, even in the KRITIS area. The holistic secure concept also includes PHYSEC's secure IoT platform IoTree, which gives utilities full control over their own data.
Operators of water networks are increasingly relying on the digitization of their supply networks. For this purpose, the old water meters are being replaced with digital water meters that transmit the current meter reading and other measurement data to the supply network operator by radio. The reasons for this are obvious. On the one hand, there is no longer any need to make regular trips to read the meters or to descend into manholes. This enables more efficient use of personnel and greater convenience for the end consumer. On the other hand, valuable resources can be saved by detecting leaks upstream and downstream of the meter with the aid of modern ultrasonic water meters.
Our way to digitize your water infrastructure is to replace the water meters of the household connections with smart and LoRaWAN-enabled meters. At the same time, a municipal LoRaWAN network is set up. In this way, the meter data can be transmitted automatically at regular intervals to our IoT service platform IoTree.
The meter data is transmitted fully automatically to the network control station, the ERP system, and other third-party systems via a large number of standardized interfaces on our IoT service platform. This eliminates the need to drive down into shafts to read shaft meters, as well as the need for manual meter data collection. In addition, meter reading errors, which previously had to be corrected manually, are avoided thanks to automated data collection. The efficiency of the entire meter reading and billing process increases considerably, and personnel and time costs are reduced.
In combination with the appropriate meter hardware, in the selection of which we will be happy to assist you, IoTree also enables you to detect anomalies such as pipe bursts, leaks, as well as tampering and backflows. Thus, these can be quickly identified and remedied, which leads to the prevention of water losses, structural damage and sanitary impairments.
Furthermore, access to constantly updated consumption data enables automated consumption forecasts and a completely new level of network monitoring. This creates the basis for an automated check of the dimensioning of meters, network and connections.
Together with data-based network optimization and anomaly detection, this results in considerable efficiency gains in network operation.
